Poor Airbus brushed aside by Glossop
Sluggishness, laziness and too many ineffective periods of play were the key factors in Airbus Ladies ineptitude performance. Blustery conditions and an artificial pitch played their part in making this a very scrappy encounter, but excuses cannot be made.
Starting strongly and hoping to use the wind to their advantage Airbus but pressure on Glossop working the ball down the right flank well with Croft and Pearson exchanging passes. However, a few attacking throw ins and a corner were all that resulted with Airbus failing to stamp their authority on the game.
The first goal came against the run of play going to the home side. The Airbus defence failed to close the opposition, giving the Glossop midfielder too much time on the ball to unleash a hopeful shot which was sent looping over keeper Walden with a large chunk of help from the wind.
Airbus began the game with a different starting XI once again and this showed early on with a lack of cohesion throughout the side. The back four had two different inclusions to those that started against Glossop in the reverse fixture three weeks ago, and influential midfielder Williams was unavailable for the match.
Conceding an early goal hit Airbus and they lost their early momentum. The central midfield pairing of Knox and Hyndman tried to get a grip of the game with Hyndman dribbling through the middle and playing the ball through to Price who was able to get a shot on goal but the keeper saved easily.
Most of Airbus’ play continued to come down the right flank with Croft playing some good balls to the corner for the strikers to latch on to. But with Glossop settling down after their goal they began to cause problems across the pitch. Their right winger took advantage of some fantastic through balls from their defence. One of these balls helped Glossop to double the lead with the lone striker running on to a squared ball from the right midfielder to slot home beyond Walden.
The away side refused to let heads go down but could not get a firm grasp on the game. Glossop continued to push harder to extend their lead which did not take long as they took advantage of some poor marking by Knox and Scammell at a corner to make it 3 nil with half an hour gone. With a comfortable margin Glossop settled and proved why they are above Airbus in the league. They started to play the ball along the ground with ease and made Airbus look particularly poor. A fourth goal just before half time gave Glossop a commanding lead but the Wingmakers still felt they were capable of getting something from the game.
With the wind against them in the second half Airbus knew they would be in for a physically draining 45 minutes but perhaps were not quite expecting the game to unfold in the manner that it did. Jones replaced Hyndman at half time, who had to leave through injury, but could not make much of an impression in a difficult second half. Both the left and right wingers, Graham and Croft were also unable to take hold of the game as the conditions proved tough to compete with.
Struggling to gain possession and giving the ball back to the opposition far too easily Airbus made life complicated for themselves and were forced back into their own half for prolonged periods of play. With the wind appearing to get stronger Airbus could not keep the ball and had to defend incredibly deep to prevent themselves from going further behind. McKeogh came on to replace Graham on the left as Graham was removed to prevent worsening an injury.
Minutes later a seemingly harmless cross from the left which Scammell looked to have dealt with, only to spend too much time on the ball, provided Glossop with their fourth goal. The Glossop striker took the ball off Scammell and had the composure to lay it off to the oncoming midfielder to fire into the back of the net.
At this point the home side began to slow through tiredness and Price managed to make a good run down the wing before being bundled into the corner flag. Seeming to injure herself Price had to depart the field minutes later leaving the team to play with ten.
With Airbus Ladies having to finish the game without 11 players on the pitch for the second match running the team continued to battle for every ball. Unfortunately another corner was their downfall as the Glossop captain powered a header into the roof of the net from a well placed cross.
At six nil Airbus had their first real chance on goal with Knox bringing the ball down and playing the perfect through ball to Borley who took it in her stride. One on one with the keeper Borley was favourite to come out on top, she hit a curling shot that seemed destined for the back of the net only to see the ball swerve at the last moment, to the relief of the Glossop goalkeeper and to the disappointment of the Airbus players.
The Wingmakers had another opportunity though Borley later on as Shute, Knox and McKeogh worked it down the left wing, but Borley was unable to get enough power behind the shot to trouble the keeper.
The home side still had time to score one more goal before the full time whistle with the Airbus defence failing to step up in time, the Glossop left winger beat the offside trap and scored a scorcher.
The home side fully deserved the emphatic win as Airbus failed to reproduce the form that saw them beat Glossop only weeks earlier. The ladies will be hoping they can improve their performance next Sunday when they play hosts to Macclesfield Town.
