Wingmakers unbeaten run continues against Droylsden
Jake Cassidy on target.
Airbus UK Broughton continued their unbeaten run over pre-season with a 1-0 win against Blue Square Bet North side Droylsden. Dave Pace brought a strong Bloods side to the Airfield which posed a real challenge to the Wingmakers. Meanwhile Airbus boss Craig Harrison introduced on-loan Wrexham youngsrer Leon Clowes to the side and he went on to give a very assured display at the back.
The first-half was very even as the Wingmakers matched Droylsden in every department. Carl Owen and Jake Cassidy linked up well together up front but saw chances saved well by goalkeeper Paul Phillips. On quarter of an hour Owen was through on goal and seemed set to score only to be pulled back by a Droylsden defender. There was some debate over whether the incident occurred inside or outside the penalty area before a free-kick was awarded - Gio Feliciello going close from the set-piece.
Droylsden's biggest threat was carried by Luke Holden - with Charlton and Wrexham last season - but Phil Clarke and Jack Abraham combined to keep him relatively quiet. Wingmakers goalkeeper Kristian Rogers had only one save to make - tipping over from the prolific Ciaran Kilheeney. The first-half subsequently ended 0-0.
Both sides made changes at the break but it was Airbus who stepped their game and began to create openings. Matty Cook prompted the play but it was another piece of magic from teenager Jake Cassidy that would settle the game. On 65 minutes he escaped his marker with a flick before lashing home a sublime finish on the edge of the penalty area to give the Wingmakers a 1-0 lead. It was another great goal and all-round performance from the youngster.
As further changes were made airbus never looked in danger of losing their lead. Kristian Rogers had little to do despite the presence of Kilheeney and David McNiven. The Wingmakers kept the ball well and were provided fresh impetus by Tom Rowlands and Paul McManus. Droylsden came into it more in the latter stages when searching for an equaliser but it finished 1-0 to Airbus. It was another good performance from the Wingmakers which bodes well as the new season draws closer.
